DESCRIPTION
The fishing settlement in the village of Vetren is a favorite place of the guests of the village, offering fresh Danube fish. The peaceful and pleasant atmosphere is a prerequisite for complete relaxation.
HISTORY
It is believed that the Vetren village was inhabited long before the new era. In ancient times, it served as a Roman road station that expanded into a fortress known as Tegultium. The fortress was situated on a hill (Kaleto), near the Danube river. The local population of the village - grebentsi, is one of the oldest inhabitants of Dobrudzha. Today, people in the village worship the folk customs and have preserved the Dobrudzha music and dances in their authentic form.
Old Dobrudja houses are preserved in the oldest part of the village. Some of them are restored and welcome tourists in this beautiful Bulgarian place.
A special charm of the village gives the proximity to the Danube River. A fishermen's village is located on the shore, and visitors have to go there.
An annual event in the village is the reception of the rowing regatta on the Danube River (TID), which is held every summer at the end of August. That is followed by the Danube festival when the generous inhabitants of Vetren show that they are not only hardworking, but also very hospitable.
The International Tourist Regatta on the Danube River, TID (in German: Tour International Danubien, TID), is a marching (also called the regatta) on the Danube, the longest in the world of this kind. It is held annually since the distant 1956. It is organized by a membership organization which carries out its activities under the aegis of canoe-kayaking or tourist associations of the participating countries. The march is a 2.5-month luggage trip in the boat. The current route starts always (since 1969) at the end of June from Ingolstadt, Germany. It passes through the other organizing countries - Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania, and after 2516 kilometers ends in mid-September in Sfantu Gheorghe (Romania) on the Black Sea. In some years, the Upper Danube also traveled in separate stages - from Donauessingen to Ingolstadt. The number of participants varies from year to year, as well as in individual stages, but is always a three-digit number. The purpose of the event since the first march is mutual understanding, acceptance of life and culture in other countries, regardless of the existing political, philosophical, religious or ethnic differences. This should, in particular, encourage grooming and strengthen solidarity among water sports lovers and people from different Danube countries. Participants can, after prior notification, join the regatta and finish it on each of the planned campsites. Everyone can freely plan their schedule in the everyday stages. Daily routes (transitions) are between 20 and 60 kilometers regardless of climatic conditions (heat, rain, storm).[1]
The International Row Regatta is welcomed by a folklore program, organized by the Municipality of Silistra and the town hall of Vetren village, with the participation of amateurs from all generations. The hospitable locals serve the fish soup to the guests.
There are two books written about the village’s history - "The Medieval Vetren of the Danube" by Georgi Atanasov and Ivan Yordanov at Publishing House "Slavcho Nikolov & Co", 1994, and the book "History of the Village of Vetren, Silistra", written by Kalin Dimitrov, issued in 2006.
Because of the natural movement of the air masses the village is characterized by fresh air and is declared a resort. There is a hospital building, but for a number of reasons of financial and regional nature it is not functioning nowadays.
