HISTORY

Although it had been declared a town since 1833, Călăraş did not have a secondary school (gymnasium or high school) until 1884.

In 1864 - the City Council provided in the budget the sum of 20,000 lei for the construction of a gymnasium to be called "AL. I. Cuza ". Since the amount allocated was too low and the county prefecture did not contribute the necessary funds, the construction of the gymnasium was postponed.

The construction of the school began in 1881, and in 1882 it became primary school with grades 1, 2 and 3, while in 1884 it became a boys gymnasium. On February 19, 1894, the teachers proposed that the high school be called Ştirbei-Voda, in recognition of Prince Barbu Ştirbei, who in 1852 emancipated the city of Călăraşi. On September 1, 1919, it was transformed by a Royal Decree into the Stirbei-Voda High School of Boys, the first high school in the county. After becoming a high school, many important cultural activities such as: The Local Section of the "Cultural League", the first public library in the city, the Freamatul Coral Society and many cultural societies of the students started taking place there. For the achievements obtained, the school was awarded with diplomas and medals reinforced by the royal seal in 1909 and 1926. In 1961, the high school moved to a new place, and the old building remained inhabited by School no. 1 with grades I-VIII which, since 14 November 2003, functions under the name "Carol I" Gymnasium.

Famous researchers, writers, poets and actors such as: Panait I. Panait, Petre Diaconu, Stefan Dinulescu, I.V. Strătescu, Ion Calova, George Alboiu and Constantin Dinulescu have studied in the over 130-year-old building. Călăraşi is the administrative centre of the county with the same name. Calarasi is known for its food industry, the melamine chip industry, the steel industry, the paper industry and the prefabricated industry.

In 2004, the first high school in Călăraşi was recognized by the National Commission for Historical Monuments and included in the list of historical monuments.
